Description:
A
split level front garden with a single parking space which was
retained by an imitation stone wall. A flower bed blocked access
from the car to the front door, thus becoming an unofficial muddy
path. The concrete entrance path to the front door, although,
flanked by original stone pillars, was unwelcoming. The dustbin
was prominent and was the first visual feature coming out of the
house. Existing plants were blocked light into the front windows.
The Brief:
To tidy up the front garden to make it more attractive
and create a through path from the parking area, to make the dustbins
and utility meters less visual and to keep some planted areas.
The Design:
The parking area was gravelled, retaining the existing
Victorian paver 'tyre guides'. The front path was paved in sandstone
with detailing in the same Victorian pavers. An access path was
created to the car area with a single stone step down through
the new stone retaining wall.
Planting
The
garden received morning and midday sun. Strategic planting areas
were incorporated to screen bin area, utility meters and soften
the hard landscaping. Plant selection included architectural miscanthus
garss, bergenias, lavenders, ferns, Hemerocallis, Pennisetum,
Hebe and ajugas. A variegated ivy and Clematis alpina will in
time screen the trellis in front of the dustbin area.
