Description:
A
shady passageway linking two houses and clients front door was
rather stark and not very welcoming. Existing area included concrete
paved path, gravel covered borders and some rather desolate plants.
Area received more sun in summer, but was mostly shaded by a hazel
tree and houses most of the year. A public footpath ran parallel,
divided by a 4ft brick wall but was screened by elderflower bushes.
Soil condition was an unknown, having been covered since 1990's
by plastic sheeting and gravel.
The Brief:
To make entrance to front door feel more inviting. Planting
was to have seasonal interest. Existing plants were to be incorporated
into scheme if appropriate. Gravel mulch was to be retained for
future maintenance.
The Planting Design:
Existing shrubs were pruned to a more balanced shapes.
New plants
were chosen to thrive in shade and included cool loving ferns,
further hydrangeas, hostas, geraniums. woodland grasses (variegated
luzula) and cimifugas.
A variegated dogwood lifted the scheme as well as providing winter
interest (along with hellebores and a skimmia rubella). Climbers
included Clematis 'Nelly Moser and C. 'Bluebird'. Additionally
a virginia creeper (Parthenocissus henryana) with its lovely silvery
veined leaves would climb through adjacent elder bushes and turn
a wonderful red in autumn. Spring bulbs will be planted for early
interest.
