Site Description: The
small urban wedge-shaped garden (3m x 11m) with a slight slope
and was bounded on two sides by imposing garages.
The Brief: To create a Victorian style garden and re-use the
original victorian pavers. The client needed access to the back
gate and garage at the end of the garden.
The Design:
The space was used to the maximum, and gently terraced to take
advantage of the slope. The existing lawn with large holly bush
was replaced by a gravel terrace, and planted up with sun loving
plants such as lavenders, roses and geraniums.
A warm terracotta paint colour was used on the house and garage
walls to unify the garden. The existing industrial metal steps
to the end garage were replaced by more pleasing timber ones
and both garage buildings were screened using trellis, climbers
and a Hupeh Rowan tree.
The small damp paved area by the house was enlarged and transformed
into an elegant seating area; incorporating a traditional water
feature which was planted around with shade loving ferns and
hostas. A pergola links the kitchen to the garden, creating
structure as well as shade in the hotter parts of the day.
