Site Description: A
small town back garden which was north facing. It had a 1m rise
and was bounded by 3 neighbouring conifers - 2 imposing Western
Red Cedar conifers and a Leylandii.
The Brief: This garden was a sun trap in summer and the client
wanted an elegant space for relaxing and entertaining friends.
The Design: A 1 metre timber retaining wall elevates the garden
up and away from the back of the house with Indian black sandstone
paving terracing outside the kitchen French doors.
The battered lawn was replaced by a bold and stylish design
with a strong structural feel. The timber arbour frames the
sandstone terrace, its height off-setting the imposing conifer
trees. The vines will eventually clothe it over time to provide
shade from the sun.
The generous pond became the focal point of the garden with
its 'floating deck' for sunbathing'. Planting was naturalistic
with grasses and perennials. Sculptural hostas and ferns surround
the pond.
